Neither can I for obvious reasons, but I think that Bewes was Basil's first "straight-man" circa 1970 which would have been after the b/w Likely Lads series and before the Whatever Happened to... series, and that is probably why you wouldn't have remembered him.

Yes, Bewes was Basil's first straight-man after Basil got his own show in 1968, but he left in 1969 and was replaced by Derek Fowlds.
