  • RIP Murray Walker

The voice of F1 Motor Racing, Murray Walker, has died at the age of 97.

Snooker had Ted Lowe; Boxing had Reg Gutteridge; Cricket had John Arlott, and of course F1 had Murray Walker. I believe that so many people from the sport will be lining up to pay tribute to the great man.

Does anyone remember the advert for Pizza Hut or some other pizza chain circa 1995-1996 which was set in a pizza restaurant, where Walker appeared along with Damon Hill, (or it could have been Nigel Mansell or another F1 driver)? When the pizzas were served, Walker said: "and here comes the pasta", which I think that he fluffed for: "and here comes the pizza". He wasn't really an actor of course, but the cameo in that advert upheld a lot of interest - I am sure it's either on YT or in someone's off-air collection.

A great age to reach, and a great personality. RIP.

Played it on YT as a tribute yesterday - quite a funny advert. "He's out of control", Walker says at the end of it when Hill tries to shake him after saying that he finished his pizza second.

a true gent and a giant who was known outside his sport as much as he was in it.
A man who was not afraid to make the odd gaff.

I was listening to Walker's obituary on Last Word on Sunday and it reminded me that he also wrote the famous Mars Bar advertisng slogan: "a Mars a day helps you work, rest and play".

Last Word played the Opal Fruits jingle "made to make your mouth water" which was made by Mars (just like its namesake Starburst), and that was what reminded me of it.

There is also a clip of Walker on Clarkson, doing snooker commentary - doesn't quite fit in with the sport for some reason...
