  • RIP Julie Stevens

Popular presenter of Play School Julie Stevens has passed away aged 87 years. She was born in 1936 and trained as a nurse, but switched to the entertainment industry after winning a talent competition. Her most prominent early role was as the occasional sidekick to John Steed in The Avengers as Venus Smith. She also had a part in Carry on Cleo, and the TV series Girls about Town and Cabbages and Kings. She will probably be best remembered as a presenter on the aforementioned Play School from 1964 to 1988.

Amazing how she was associated with Play School; "she was such a hoot" as the late Brian Cant once said in an interview when he was asked about the co-presenters that he worked with, but stepping back, she was known for other things as well.

Mind you, Stevens was a presenter in the 1970s, and despite the show being aimed at the under fives, even I was too young to remember her in it - Floella Benjamin was more or less my Play School area, circa 1981-1982.
I've everything I need to keep me satisfied
There's nothing you can do to make me change my mind
      I'm having so much fun
      My lucky number's one
      Ah! Oh! Ah! Oh!

I don't remember watching Play School when I was young pre-school, but around 7 or 8, so Julie Stevens would have been around my era circa late 60s/early 70s. Like many, though, I watched it when I was much older. I still enjoy watching episodes on YT; it's such a shame so many shows were wiped.

Sad news, I remember her well. Bubbly lady who always seemed to have a smile on her face. RIP
