    Re: The Gideons

They used to vary in colour and size - some were bright red while others could be burgundy or even purple or brown. Older editions were a darker or red or brown, while newer ones were a brighter red - they had around 300 pages inside them.

We had someone come from Gideon International one Friday morning in November 1989 during our Humanities lesson to talk about the Gideon bible which I was familiar with because my sister had one. We all got one at the end of the lesson in which we wrote our names inside the book. I suppose that Gideon was just another branch of Christianity just like the Mormons, the Baptists, Methodists and so on, and I have stayed in quite a few hotel rooms with them on the side shelf next to the bed, if it wasn't a Good News bible there instead.

And yes, the pages were like tissue paper as well - very thin indeed.

That's how I remember them. The pages were like tracing paper (or "Izal" toilet paper, lol,), so exceptionally light and thin the overall size was exactly that of a pocket diary or address book, but about four times as thick.

They don't use the old testament as that is where the bad side of Christianity is murder , genocide, slavery rape .... you know all that stuff that the all loving god actually endorses ... hypocrites

(climbs down of his soap box and walks off shaking his head in dis belief)

sorry but religion winds me up

Mine is red, but they did show us some other colours at school for prisons, hospitals etc.

The ones in hotel rooms always seem to be brown leather.

Yes, in my first year at secondary school; they distributed small red bibles in our R.E. lessons. That would have been September or October 1991.

I well remember them coming around the school. Had my Bible for years after. Don't know what happened to it.

I've still got mine but hardly ever use it.

One of my friends who is a regular church goer reckoned it wasn't as good as the King James version.

    Re: The Gideons

The Gideons have scaled back their operations in schools in recent years because a high proportion of their bibles end up burnt, used as toilet paper, or turned into roll-ups before the school day has ended. When I was handed my Bible I replied "do you give away electron microscopes" because the print in them is so tiny.
