    Re: First computer

I wrote programs for my son on the ZX81, it actually became quite easy. Now my son is in IT for the MoD - so something rubbed off!! And his son, nearly 4 now, shows my wife how to use the pc!!!

I remember one of my Physics teachers had a ZX81 back in 1982 and he had written a game for it. It simply involved guiding a character on the screen through a very basic maze using that membrane keyboard. All my mates were mad for it, but I just felt very underwhelmed....guess I knew there were better things to come! The bloody thing kept crashing anyway. Actually I canny stand computer games they are moronic.
In 1984 I enrolled at Glasgow University to study computing science and Mathematics (I know...what was I thinking!!) we were programming in Pascal and I could not get my 17 year old neurons to comprehend what it was all about and I dropped out. I was completely averse to computers after that experience. Can't live a day without my Acer lap-top now....but then again nobody is asking me to write copious reels of Java to operate it!!

In 1990 I had visions of making my own biek fuel injection system, I got a library book[my computing knowledge was nil]
and I started learning machine code. I them bought a few computers, cheap stuff from the local papers. I figured I
would learn something and then maybe get some parts from the computers.
I bought a couple of sinclair spectrum never been taken out of the dixons special offer box, I wrote a program to work
something on bike suspension out and put it back in the box. flogged it on ebay last year.

I was given an assortment of BBC computers that were headed for the tip, I used one to control and oven to cure carbon
fibre. I flogged that one as well.

I also had an Atari an Amiga and a Amstrad. I gave those away a few years ago, I tunred the Atari on and it was
    far to complicated for me;-)

    What's this first experience?
Does the ASCCI art pics of naked ladies printed by a bloke up the road count. bloke up
the road had them stuck on his garage wall, so all the kids woudl be in ther if he opened the door, That was mid 60's.

I was a bad lad and some special class thing took us to the computer department at the university in 1971. We were shown how a program loop worked and being an imaginative bunch we all did things like work out how old we were in seconds. We wrote the program
on acrd and it went to some bloke who typed it and it came out as a card with holes punched in it, it then went to another bloke who stuffed it in the computer and the answer was printed out.

I've got a ZX81 & 48K but use an emulator for the convience - much quicker to start it up & load a game instantly than setting up the computer, finding a TV I'd be able to plug it into & wait 10 minutes for the game to load. Or fail with TAPE LOADING ERROR!

The Spectrum is by far my favourite computer I've ever used and I've many happy memories of the games we used to play on it (and I sometimes still do with an emulator)

The only downside I suppose is that it I have to blame it for me getting me interested in & choosing IT as a career...!

How we hated the continued drone of the tape loading 10 minutes of ear-ache!!!!!!!! just to not have it load properly!!!
