  • Working With Dad

My Dad was a security officer at a company security gate & I went with him sometimes.

I just loved playing with the CCTV camera's.

My mate sometimes came too & we got him dancing & mooning in front of camera's lol

Fk know's what the company boss's thought if they played back the tapes lol We never thought of deleting the tapes lol

Do you really believe the other side without provocation would launch so many ICBM's, subs and ships knowing that we would have no option to launch as well? It would break our MAD Treaty (Mutually Assured Destruction) not to mention the end of the world as we know it.

Never worked with dad officially. He was a caretaker at a local school. On the weekend, generally a Sunday, I would go to the school with him to be from under my mother's feet. The dog would also go for a walk there at the same time. I would sometimes help by cleaning/polishing the main hall floor. This was from the 1970s, through the 1980s.

Couldn't have worked with dad. He worked in a factory that manufactured lead products. Sometimes had to take time off if his blood lead levels got too high 😮

Did your dad have to wear specialised PPE?

i guess he must have worn some sort of PPE, but it was the early 80's so maybe not as stringent as things are today.

Not my dad but my mum, a secretary - during school hollybobs, I would sometimes go to her office and help typing envelopes etc.

                      Re: Working With Dad

My dad was a lorry driver. Around 1971 he started working going round farms mixing animal food. I used to go with him, but when the mixing started he made me stand far away as there was a great deal of dust produced and all he had for PPE was a simple mask with gauze as a filter--this was the 1970s remember.

Later in the early 80s he worked for a company that transported sand, gravel and similar stuff down to various places in Kent. I remember going with him and the early start around 2.30am to pick up the load and then get past London before the rush hour.

His final job was as a skip driver. I went with him and was amazed at the things that would be on the skips that people had thrown away.

                        Re: Working With Dad

My dad had his own Stainless Steel Fabrication company, I used to enjoy visiting his firm when I could. If he needed to pop in for any reason at the weekend or evening i'd sometimes go with him. Including when he had to go there because the alarm was going off, the Police used to make us go into the factory first so if anyone knocked us on the head they could nick them.
I liked the smell of metal there, my mum used to work in the office there part time so we'd sometimes hang there too, everyone smoked back then so the office smelled of metal, typewriters, cigars and ciggies.
Later on he always drove one of the company Astra Vans instead of us having a car so us kids would ride in the back, on the carpet surrounded by metal and welding gear, the van also smelled of metal and the woolen blankets used for welding shielding.

I worked there in the school holidays to make enough money to buy a 1571 Floppy Drive for my C128, that was the only time I heard him swear, he never did at home. One week was at Coca Cola as they often subbed for them, and the other week was at a flavour/scent factory, that place smelled so sickly.

Christmas was interesting as he'd get over a dozen bottles of whisky from other firms and also a heap of girly calendars, they got put up around the workshop.

There used to be a Sunday market near his firm, someone kept parking their van in one of the spaces outside my dad's offices, each week the bloke coming to get stuff from it they told to move it, he claimed he couldn't drive and it was his brothers. After a few weeks they got ****** off with this so cut the lock on the back and smashed up all the stock inside, they were mostly "flashing" garden gnomes, i.e ones with their bits out.

Sometimes he'd bring their long wheelbase lorry home and we'd get to ride in that, which was a bit of a treat as you were so high up! Sometimes i'd even ride in the back if something needed propping up.

                        Good times.

Yeah I think part of the fun was just hanging with Dad, he worked a fair bit so it was nice to hang out when we could.

My father retired due to ill health when I was younger - he was a bricklayer and electrician when he was younger. I cannot imagine myself following into his footsteps for some reason.
