This is surely the home of the future? Science fiction had become science fact for a Sydney apartment block that is being called Australia's "smartest residence"

Tech-savy house hunters can now buy into this new Burcham development in the southern suburb of Roseberry that features such innovations as finger print scanning, licence plate recognition, voice control and even its own electricity source for electric cars. It also boasts geofencing which notifies the home when the owner is approaching and presets such things at liting or heating.

The whole enchalada is fuelled by solar power. In the unlikely event of a power outage the system will shift to manual operation of the doors and utilities. Dont expect to pay anything less than $790,000 for one of these "smart apartments".

A world first Australian- developed "wearable skin" is set to revolutionize the health and diagnostic industries .. Due to the ground-breaking research by engineers at Monash University.. the skin can track health signals from such ailments as muscle strain, as well as measure blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose levels. It even assists in detecting autism. The device (see below) collects tailored data that can be monitored on any Smartphone or Blue-tooth.

One of the most important innovations in tackling crime as well as having a host of other applications was DNA profiling discovered by Sir Alec Jeffreys at Leicester University, England, in 1984. This was followed in 1995 by the world's first DNA database in the UK.

The real challenge with scramjets is to get them travelling very fast. The researchers have to test everything at once because all the components are untested components. Instead of risking failure after failure it seems better sense to test the components in a wind tunnel before putting them to the test in the field.

But a wind tunnel is too slow, so instead.. The hyshot team of engineers at the university of queensland (uq) used the t4 shock tunnel in brisbane.

A shock tunnel holds back hot helium as a piston hurtles into it, until the massive pressure bursts a piece of 3mm steel plate - called a 'diaphragm'. When it bursts a torrent of gas pours down the tunnel allowing testing of many of the design principles under high speed conditions.

Neat! what was the Scramjet mission?

Took place in 2002 at Woomera.. the old Brit nuclear site in the Sth Oz desert. This may give you some idea tex.
A scramjet is an air-breathing Supersonic Combustion RAMjet. It is basically a very high speed scoop that gathers up air (oxygen), forcing it into a combustion chamber where the fuel (usually hydrogen) is burned, generating thrust that keeps the craft going. The only 'exhaust' is water. The trick is to get a scoop which has low enough drag so the scramjet generates a thrust greater than the drag caused by the scoop. This will always be a difficult balancing trick. This trick was achieved by a University of Queensland team at the above place and time.

You may find this interesting. The first ever successfull launch/test flite of a Scramjet (see below) occurred in a remote part of inland Oz by an Oz university team..

A friend of mine was involved in the UQ Scramspace project, she was gutted when their launch from Norway failed in 2013.

Are you Brits having trouble getting your minds around the fact that so many of these inventions are by Australians. I am quite proud of that fact.. and there are plenty more. Google Maps for instance was created by a Sydney company.
