    Re: Diaries

I kept a brief one in 1971, inspired by the 'journal' of the character 'Dorry' in the 'What Katy Did' book but like Dorry's, it didn't last very long.

On New Year's Eve 1972, I listened to Jimmy Savile on the radio and he mentioned looking back on the year through his diary. I thought it would be fun to do that so I started keeping a diary from New Year's Day 1973 and this time I stuck with it. And I still keep a diary!

      Re: Diaries

Never kept a diary as a child.I used to have a stack of scrap books with stickers, feathers, drawings and sweet wrappers in them, even tea cards etc.Anything that could go in went in including stamps and postcards.I think some of my primary school work went in them too.Parants being parants threw them out years ago after thinking I had got too old for them and considering I no longer used them.Such a shame as they did not stop to think they would of been treasured in later life by me.
I tried to keep a diary at secondary school, but after a fell ill due to the continous problems I had there I stopped.
Over the years I have tried and tried again to keep a diary, even specific diarys for certain things.Dream diarys, wildlife diarys, field guides and visits.General diarys, etc. Most seem to not be followed through for very long and the main diary I started in the late 80's and kept on and off untill about 5 years ago got burned on the bonfire as I felt the contents far too depressing to read.I went through a bad patch of depression whilst writing it on and off so it had to go.It helped at the time getting it all down on paper but too bad for me to read later on.I have kept odd writings on loose pages since.I was thinking of starting a new wildlife nature diary next year as I spend a lot of time in the countryside. But it will be something I would use as a form of therapy.I am inspired in part by The country diary of an Edwardian lady by Edith Holden.

          Re: Diaries

I had a few diaries from the ages of 14 to 18 I think. My elder Sister was nasty enough to find them and read them...She even once wrote a nasty comment in one when she'd seen I\d been writing about her. It made me sick of diaries after that. These are supposed to be private. Private thoughts, musings, feelings put to paper...If someone cannot respect that, then what secrecy is left is by not writing one. And yes, I tried hiding them all the time but she found them....Cannot stand her sadly, even now she's the same callous person.

a diary is something i never had.

I always thought it was more girls that kept diaries.
now i know a fella in his fifties and he had a few diaries.
he had his first when he was ten and he is now early fifties and he still writes in them.

              Re: Diaries

Here's a couple of diaries that have been published on the web, one by an American guy detailing his life as a teenager in 1976 and the other by a British guy outlining his days as a 13-14 year old in 1986. Quite fun to dip into.
