The Environment Agency does have a facility to register a telephone number now to receive automated calls for any alerts or warnings in a particular area.
Where I've lived for the last 16 years is literally right next to the sea - I can walk out of my back door, over the dunes and be on the beach in about half a minute. We got through the extremely high tides and strong winds a few weeks ago thanks to the concrete sea wall along this stretch of coast, although it was close to coming over the top at the peak. Unfortunately, some people north and south along the coast didn't fare so well, and were flooded out. A few people completely lost their sand-dune homes as the sea just undermined them.
