  • Census 2021

It comes around once every ten years, and last week I had received a leaflet in my letterbox about this year's (or indeed this decade's) census will be happening on Sunday 21st March 2021. I am certain however that I did hear that due to COVID that the Census might have been postponed until next year or something, but it's nice that it's going ahead. There was talk a few years ago about scrapping the census but it was just talk.

On a tangent from the 50 Years of Decimalisation thread, the 1971 Census PIFs were on the old Charley Live video next to the decimalisation one, and it does paint a picture to future generations as to what life was like in the past. Certainly, coronavirus would make an impact this time around as to how things are measured now. The fact that the census information will be under lock and key for 100 years almost gives relief to us all - I believe that the 1921 census will be open to us not too long into the future? - it is a bit like unearthing a time capsule in many ways. I used old Census records on the Find My Past website for my research into family history, going back to 1841, as well as the pre-Second World War one from 1939 - I mentioned the relevant thread.

I am looking forward to the A4 envelope arriving in the post, filling the form in and posting it back - this will be my third census that I have overseen personally after participating in the 2001 and 2011 ones - my parents did the 1991 census and before that. I didn't get anyone from the government come after me, so I must have filled in both forms correctly, thank goodness. I know that people think that it is a nuisance filling the form in and even a breach of privacy (or GDPR these days), but at the end of the day, we all have to do it, and we should have nothing to be worried or scared by doing so, and it's only once every ten years. I believe that we have more to be worried or being scared about by not cooperating filling it in.

I think that it is a good thing because we need to plan for the future - how people's habits change, where we need to build more schools and housing, especially in the current climate. As we know, looking at 1971, 1981, and 1991, things had changed culturally in Britain in which we have discussed on this forum so many times, and that is what makes it fascinating.

Have you received the census forum in the past, yet? It shouldn't be long now...

Friday's post: the postman inserted inside my personal letterbox (why does it sound a bit rude saying it like that?) two items:

        A) The latest copy of Private Eye magazine courtesy of Unique Magazines where I now have a subscription with them set up at the start at the year - Sturgeon and Salmond on the front cover due to what has recently happened aka Holyrude [sic].

        B) The correspondence from the Census 2021 brigade, inviting me to fill it in online or send for a paper copy (which I did). As you know. it was addressed to "The Householder".

Hopefully, I will receive it next weekend and probably post it back first thing on the following Monday morning. If you need to look out for yours, it will be in a white A5 envelope with address in see-through window - the "Census 2021" and the "Office for National Statistics" logos are in a burgundy colour on the front of the envelope. Please make sure that when you receive it in the post that you fill in and return it as soon as possible because the consequences would not be worth thinking about if you didn't. I survived 2001 and 2011, so it should be third time lucky for myself.

I thought you had to send off for it? That's what I've been told.

Well, I have just opened it and it says that either I can enter it online or send off for a traditional paper copy, which is what I have done - quoting name and address on census.gov.uk. As long as it is done for Sunday 21st March 2021 it doesn't matter.

I can't quite remember what happened ten years ago - I just know that most people used a paper copy back then.

Received my 2021 Census form in A4 envelope in the post on Friday - will complete it over the weekend.

I resisted against completing it online in case the computer crashed while filling it in and lost the information - anyway, I filled mine in at around 6.00 pm on Saturday. The fact that not all questions were not relevant to myself meant that it could be filled in a lot quicker - ten minutes as the front of the form says. The world isn't going to change too much between now and Sunday 21st March 2021, and so I believe that it is as accurate filling it in now as it would be then.

And of course, Question 17 - the one that is left intentionally blank. I read somewhere why this is so, but forgotten the answer to it.

Finally popped my completed Census 2021 into the local postbox at around 11.04 pm on Sunday night - only another ten years before the next one. I cannot wait!

I always think of John Denver's Annie's Song when I was completing it: "you fill up my Census..."
