Two of my favourite horror films are B+W: The Innocents (1961) and The Haunting (1963). Both use their monochrome cinematography masterfully and have an atmosphere of unease and menace that wouldn't be the same if they were in colour.

I remember back in the '70s that many of these films from the '30s and '40s were a regular staple of television programming. Sadly, they're rarely seen today.

Cuesta Abajo (1934) -- Argentinian film starring Carlos Gardel, a famous tango singer from the '30s
Here Comes the Navy (1935) -- This film starred James Cagney, Pat O'Brien and Gloria Stuart (Titanic) and was filmed aboard the ill-fated US battleship Arizona.

never saw any of those but i hear ice cold in alex is rather good.

love the original psycho from 1960.

love the old charlie chaplin a films as well as laurel and hardy.
just because they are B and W does not mean they cant be very good.

funny enough quatermass was on last year i think.
first time id seen it.
these strange rocks everywhere very hot and if you touch them its goodbye to you.

also love the original titanic film which is in black and white.
its better in black and white than the modern version with winslett and di caprio.

b&w gives the film a real edge as it makes it far more atmospheric and makes the disaster seem worse for those involved.

also watched great expectations last chrimbo from 1946 which id not seen before and i just loved it.
i really though it would not be good.

it goes to show black and white films can be very good in fact black and white can really add atmosphere to a film.

also love the 39 steps from 1935 by alfred hitchcock.

Metropolis is a real classic,and of the silent era as well.I have a passion for 50's sci fi movies,and all the B movies were in black and white.Classics like the Thing from another world,Earth vs the flying saucers,Beast from 20,000 fathoms,fiend without a face and many many more.Mind you there are some real clonkers like the Giant claw or plan 9 from outer space but they can be so bad they are a scream to watch so in a way still have a charm of their own.Many of the old black and white horror films are still as good to watch today as they were when they were first released.

Quatermass and the pit is a good film,but colour.Try the original BBC seriel of it from 1958.Black and white full of suspence and had me sitting right on the edge of the chair,something the later film never did.It also feels much more menacing and the special effects are not too bad either for the period it was made in.A much superior product in Black and white.

Most of the films i watched throughout the 70's etc were black and white films.I still watch them when they are on tv.

I watched passport to pimlico yesterday good film,starring Stanley Holloway a young Charles Hawtrey without his specs.Was wandering wether or not he only wore glasses for the carry on films
