    Re: Black and White Films

Some of my favourite films are b&w.

Psycho - The most terrifying movie ever made!
    12 Angry Men
    The 39 Steps
    Shadow Of A Doubt
Duck Soup, Night At The Opera and Day At The Races.
    Oh Mr. Porter!
    All Laurel and Hardy films
The Frankenstein movies with Boris Karloff
The Dracula movies with Bela Lugosi
Freaks - A 1932 film which is still scary!

      Re: Black and White Films

Most films pre 1950 were Black and White, and there was a lot being made right up to the mid 60's and beyond so there's a lot out there.

Anyway - High Noon is another classic as are most of the films cited in this thread.
I go back to the original Jethro Tull - Yes! The seed drill inventor!

I must just add my fave b&w weepies :

          Wuthering Heights - Olivier
          Angels With Dirty Faces
          It's A Wonderful Life

          And more horror films :

Night Of The Living Dead - 1968
Dead Of Night - Well spooky! Especially that dummy that comes to life.
The Day The Earth Stood Still - More Sci Fi really. (Weren't those 50s Sci-Fi movies great? Them, Tarantula, The Creature From The Black Lagoon etc.)

            Agreed! I love the old 50's sci-fi 'B' movies.

Two of my favourites where The Quatermass Xperiment and Quatermass 2, starring Brian DonLevy in the title roll. I was only very little the first time I saw The Quatermass Xperiment and it traumatised me for about a week; I was petrified the creature that Caroon had turned into in Westminster Abbey was behind my bed and I couldn't sleep because I kept turning round every few minutes to check it wasn't sliding down my headboard .

back on thread: remembered another....Great Expectations....1936 version with John Mills (again, spookily)

                Re: Black and White Films

What bugs me is when they try to show they're 'cool and with it' by making modern B&W films - this got popular in late eighties and they still keep churning em out.

I like the oldie classics but it annoys (esp with the price of a colour telly licence ) that they still make these in B&W

So many classics mentioned here, it's tough the add to the list, but I think I can:
                  Brighton Rock
                  Great Expectations

Has anyone mentioned George Formby films, they're always good for a laugh, I especially like 'No Limit'. Also, other b&w films that come to mind are King Kong, Sunset Boulevard and The Grapes of Wrath.

Must admit, I cannot bear Norman Wisdom, but can see the appeal at the time.
I have to go with Citizen Kane, Brighton Rock, The Third Man, M, Metropolis as faves among others.
Also the classic B&W Comedy of my all time favorite comedian..Tony Hancock

                        (honourable mention to Eraserhead)

How about films with the bossy Peggy Mount in them.

One of my long-time favourites is 'Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?' starring Bette Davis and Joan Crawford. I've always loved this film, pure excellence.

Another Bette Davis film I like is 'The Nanny'.

I love Bette Davis portaying evil characters - it's what she did best .
