At the time, circa 1971, it caused a bit of a stir, but is largely forgotten now. Those life-size child replacements were so creepy.

Here's a clue: The title was a single word. The two male characters were probably some of the biggest ITV stars in the late 70s and 80s.

The film was Fright from 1971. The two male stars were Dennis Waterman and George Cole, who went on to great success in Minder.
