Correct for The Long Good Friday, Clare. As for the other, the actor was part of a much married couple, and they were actually married to each other twice. He had a wonderful voice and she was considered a great beauty. He died far too early about 35 years ago.

Yes, it was Richard Burton, who played a Kray-type gangster in the 1971 film Villan. It was made the same year as the far better remembered Get Carter.

I know James Bolem was in it for sure. As for the other...I remember Bill Owen played Thelma's dad, but not sure if he was in A Kind of Loving, but I will go for him.

Ok...staying with that fine actor Alan Bates...In the early 70s he co-starred with another really good performer, Janet Suzman, in a screen adaptation of a play about a couple looking after a profoundly disabled child and how it affects them and their relationship. What was the film?

The answer is A Day in the Death of Joe Egg, a film well worth seeing. It used to turn up occasionally on late night BBC in the 70s and 80s.
