I have never had a Victory V although I know of them. They sound a bit like imps - can anybody remember those. Little black liquorice things.

Just telling the kids about these the other day, we had two competitions. See who could keep one in their gob for the longest, then keep one if the gob for 5mins........and drink a pint of cold water.

The first thing ever I was sent to the shop unaccompanied for was Victory V's. My great grandmother sent me and I remember it being a very daring adventure (even though it was only the corner shop) because I wasn't allowed out of our street alone usually. But the lady in the shop didn't know what "Burning sweets" meant so I had to go all the way back to ask what they were called and then back to the shop to tell her. I've always loved them. Seems they contained cannabis originally

"...a confectioner named Thomas Fryer created his palliative for the common cold by combining pulverised sugar, linseed, liquorice, chlorodyne (a soothing mix of cannabis and chloroform) and pure acacia gum. It met with acclaim."

Victory V gums were lovely too.

Tricky, they're NOTHING like Imps. Imps are disgusting!

                      Re: Victory V's

Loved these Victory V's my Granda always used to have em, I also discovered that if you held them between your teeth, and rubbed your tongue against them, they would eventually get unbearably nippy which I loved Sadly, my Granda isn't here anymore  But I do remember quite a few years ago Buying a couple of packets, unfortunately whether my tastebuds have changed or the VV recipe ?? but they don't have a nippy burn anymore
DON'T TELL HIM YOUR NAME PIKE!!

They don't contain chloroform, ether or cannabis any more Maybe we should start an online petition.

                          Re: Victory V's

We always seemed to have a packet of Victory V sweets in the house in cold weather.

My aunt worked in a corner shop when she was young. The owner was so mean that she wouldn't have any heating in the shop even during the coldest weather. Instead she would give my aunt a Victory V to keep her warm. Actually, it was half a Victory V as she reckoned a full one was too strong...absolutely true story.
