  • Stunt Car Racer

Geoff Crammonds Stunt Car Racer was released in 1989 and was a stunning game. Taking place on an elevated track (imagine Hard Drivin crossed with a rollercoaster) and you drove in a dragster type car against two other drivers. There were four divisions with increasingly difficult race tracks in each division. The car you drove had crash damage and to speed things up a turbo that could be used for a short period in each race. Stunt Car Racer was the best game on the Spectrum IMHO.

    Re: Stunt Car Racer

Didn't get to play it on a Spectrum, but I still have an original copy boxed away with my Amiga Kit,
It took some skill as you mention your damage would limit the experience you could gain on each of the tough tracks. You were required to be at exactly the right speed for jumps, it was great fun , had an awesome sound & Geoff of course went on to some more wonderful Car Race Sims.. Absolute Legend...
Ever play 2 players with a null modem? Superb fun

Didn't fancy this when I first saw a mate playing it. But it was the jumps that made me want a go. I had a Speccy at the time and bought it for that. What a brilliant game. Later, I got an Amiga, and just had to have Stunt Car Racer with more colour, and filled-in graphics. And yes, I played it linked up with another player. Seems nothing to today's gamers, but back in 1992 (or thereabouts), seeing another car (okay, wedge with wheels) go past you, knowing your real-life mate was driving it (just a few feet of cable away) was a mind-shattering experience. Hehe.
