Pedal pushers (or clam-diggers) were fashion items popular from the 50s through to the early-80s, named so because they were originally worn by cyclists. I guess their short length meant no nasty oil stains or entanglements in the bike pedals. Pedal Pushers were tight trousers, a bit like capri pants, that came to just below the knee and were usually finished with a buckle at the bottom. The biggest fashion was dark velvet pedal pushers with white tights and black patent shoes. Real New Romantics!
