Tin toy cars were very popular in the 1950's and 1960's, these were later replaced with diecast models in the 1970's. Tin toy cars were produced in America, South America, Europe, and most notably, Japan. These toys used friction to make them move. A central wheel (the friction wheel) is wound up by pushing the rear wheels of the toy backwards or forwards against a flat surface. When the toy is placed on the ground the friction wheel provides momentum to the other wheels to move the toy.
