American television mini-series from the 1980's which starred Richard Chamberlain.This mini-series was set in the 17th century and was about an English ship pilot who's vessel shipwrecked on the Japanese coast. The main character 'John Blackthorne' was forced into the middle of a war for who the participants were fighting for the position of 'Shogun'.Blackthorne was appointed an interpreter (Japanese Lady - Mariko) whom he fell in love with but she later died saving him from an attack.The narrative was done by Orson Welles and it was noted that none of the Japanese actors / actresses could neither speak or understand English.

saw this as a spotty teenager and was most impressed.One of the major reasons why I have spent twenty or so years of my life now in Japan.
