Wham's Last Christmas has become the Christmas number one for two years running! The first time this has happened in the British charts (although Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody was a Christmas number one in two seperate years, 1975 and 1991 - the latter following Freddie Mercury's death). Mary's Boy Child had two different versions of the song becoime number one, but it wasn't the same singer or group on both occasions. It is nice that a song about Christmas is at the top of the charts, no matter how old it happens to be.
It's a pity that George Michael (my near namesake) never lived to see (or even hear it) become a Christmas number one - in many ways, the song getting to the top is a bit like the "waiting for a bus" analogy; one waits nearly four decades for it to get to the top, and it eventually becomes number on, two Christmases in a row! This year, the word "Last" in Last Christmas makes the song so ironic - one could say, last Christmas, Last Christmas was the Christmas number one. I have always assumed that it would have been the Christmas number one back in 1984 had it not been for the Band Aid single (nothing wrong with that of course), and Do They Know It's Christmas also had the irony of George Michael singing oin the lyrics as well.
It's a lot better than LadBaby anyway.
