  • Dads Army

My wife runs a charity shop and I often have the job of selling a few select pieces through good old eBay!! One such item that has recently surfaced in the stockroom of the shop is this Dads Army board game. I believe it's from the early 70's and seems to be in fairly reasonable condition. I just thought I'd post up a few pictures of it for you board game fans.......

I'm going to have to have a game before it goes...............

Pathetic. Remember that British Airways woman who couldn't wear her necklace with the Cross on it for 'fear of upsetting Muslims'? While I abhor Nazism of WW2, their war crimes committed against British Servicemen at places like Dunkirk etc and The Holocaust I am bloody fed up of the apologist mentality society still have to maintain over what the Swastika connotes - the hypocrisy comes from the way modern Israel doesn't allow non-jews to be buried in their Jewish cemetaries, the way many Jews who proclaim they are 'moderates' don't like inter mixing with non Jews even for a relationship, the way many Muslims expect us to accept their hardline views, building Mosques everywhere and the fact that they don't intermix with other races whilst spouting racist viewpoints on modern western society....we have to seem to be apologetic whilst having to turn the other cheek to abuse of one form or another. One could say modern Israels more like a Nazi state with its hardline views and xenophobic attitudes to non Jews and non Jewish religeon....and before anyone pipes up and states I'm being racist, look at the facts, its one rule for one lot another for others...I'm pretty fed up of the zealous censorship the Swastika connotes on the internet especially ebay its like just because a seller sells something with it on he or shes apparently a bloody Nazi....ridiculous. The board game thing proves this...

Ebay banned it from being auctioned on its site due to inciting 'racial hatred'.

yeah it was very good mate.
                  one of the better episodes.
some of the actors in it must have been very old when the show started.

They still get listed on there though..... The PC brigade gets rather OTT at times, I can understand some things as being unacceptable in todays society, but Dads Army???

                      Re: Dads Army

To me it looks like somebody complained about it. Sad to say, but in thirteen years of selling on eBay I've learned that all it takes is one person to ruin your day. Nine out of ten might not have a problem with something but the one who does always seems to carry more weight than the rest. Knowing the PC brigade that eBay is and their capriciousness, I would have simply covered up the swastikas on the box if I thought that somebody might complain about it. Though, paradoxically, I specialise in books on military history and have listed numerous books about WWII that had swastikas on the cover and they've never been pulled.

                        Re: Dads Army

I covered up the swastikas for the main photograph, but the photos that went in the rest of the advert showed everything. Luckily it never got pulled and I sold it without a hitch.

One thing that just struck me though is that the design on the board makes it look as though there is real depth to the picture. Nothing amazing really, but it must have taken them ages to come up with the finished article. I also spotted the original price sticker on the edge of the box. £2.75 from WHSmiths.....

                          Re: Dads Army

Difficult to understand why eBay banned the swastika image on it's UK site, the whole point is that we BEAT the Nazi's, the symbol's redundant!
Re. Darren's comment, most of the actors in it WERE getting on a bit, it's true, and most of them died in the early '80s (Arthur Lowe, John LeMesurier etc.) Clive Dunn pegged on until only about 10 years ago though. Sadly though, some of the younger cast members pre-deceased the older ones- James Beck, who played the 'soldier spiv' Private Walker, passed away in '73 aged only 42, when the show was still in production, so had to be written out of the script. Also Bill Pertwee, who played cantakerous ARP man Bill Hodges, was also only in his late '50s when he died.

Bill is still alive as far as I know. He's about 85.
