Can anyone help me out here - about 10 years ago played a game at a friends party which involved the following. 1 person would read the summary of a book from the insert and would then flip a coin. If it was heads then the other players would try to write the 1st line of the book, tails the last line. The other players would then try to guess the correct one. Can't remember the name or the maker ??? Please put me out of my misery !

Hello,
I think Ex Libris is the game you are looking for. I don't know how long it's been around, but a writing group member brought exactly what you describe to a writing circle games night last Christmas.
Okay...typing Ex Libris into ebay seems to bring up lots of vintage nude prints, but there amongst them is the Ex Libris Game (in toys&games/games/drinking&after dinner games category) currently with 2 and a bit days to go at 99p. If you miss that, I'm sure you'll find it somewhere now you have the name.
Here's a few piccies.
