The Alone in the Dark series by Infogrames are influential in that they were the inspiration for Capcom's famous Resident Evil series.
The games feature a detective called Edward Carnby, who is giving the distinct honour of being known as the "Supernatural Private Eye." Gameplay is a mixture of puzzle solving and frequent combat, and there are a lot of notes to read through.
The first game came out in 1992 and can be considered the first game to be made in full 3D. The camera angles were pretty innovative at the time, although they've become a thing of the past now.
The follow ups were not as well recieved, although they retain much of the series' highs and lows. In 2001, Infogrames made another one called "The New Nightmare" and it was basically a Resident Evil game under the Alone in the Dark banner.
I heard there's a new one coming out for the Xbox 360 this year. It will mark the return of Edward Carnby, as he investigates strange paranormal activity in Central Park. I hope it comes out on the PS2 first, though.
