1942 at the arcades. It's great to play it even now. It's nearly 30 years old.

I regularly play Track & Field, Asteroids and Galaga on my arcade cabinet.
They all play as well as they did 30 years ago.

In general, 2D games age much more gracefully than 3D games,
Some early 3D stuff looks terrible these days.

By the way, I can't believe that you've never played Capcom's 1942 Darren.
Classic game, followed up by (in this order) 1943, 1943 Kai, 1941, 19XX and 1944.
Also look out for the similar Strikers 1945 series by Psyiko.

Yeah, I know them well, Horace Goes Skiing was always my fave.

You should look into emulation Darren buddy,
You can play F Zero flawlessly with the BSnes emulator.
Plus all those games I mentioned are playable in MAME, which is an excellent arcade game emulator.

i can just buy them for their original consoles which i prefer to do.
there is something extra special about playing them on their original consoles.

another i must say will never age is majora's mask.
i know its very recent but for a zelda game it has a very dark tone to it which is unusual for zelda games.

some of the music is very haunting especially in ikana canyon.
