  • Classic Joysticks - what was your favourite?

I'm talking something you could plug into an Atari, C64, Vic-20, Megadrive (Genesis) etc. Anything with a 9-pin d-type plug.

My favourite was my trusty Competition Pro (hard on the hands but SO controllable). I struggled with a Quickshot Pro Turbo II for a year, a Delta 2 (horrible fire button) and a Quickshot Joyball (which I got as a free gift for subscribing to ZZAP64 for a year!) The worst was a Quickshot I - which lasted less than a day. BAH! There were many others - all forgettable (including 'The Bug' - easy on the hands but no diagonals!)

Their light of pocket torch, of signal flare,
Licks at the edge of unsuspected places,
While others scan, under an arc-lamp's glare,
Nursery, kitchen sink, or their own faces.

Here's a signature I use on gaming sites which shows a few of the joysticks I have owned over the many different systems:

My favourites were the Competition Pro (3rd from left) the Konix Speedking (4th from left) and the Bug (5th from left). I guess I just liked those microswitches.

Would've LOVED a Speedking - only heard good things about them.... but I'm a lefty. D'OH!

I wore out loads of joysticks in the 80s especially those Kempstons but still have my Konix Navigator which is working perfectly. I do occasionally play games on my Commodore Amiga with it but it's very noisy (always has been) as each movement makes a pretty loud click.
I hate those horrible modern joypads, what a ridiculous invention!

The classc Atari joystick - but for games that needed a long of "wiggling" ie Decathlon/Ninja Master - a Quickshot II was ideal

Competition Pro back in the day, although I used to want to try out the Speedking.

These. LOOOVED the Quickshot II. Best thing for playing AH-64 Apache or F-15 Strike Eagle on.

Oh, sweet, joyful, crampy pain, how I miss thee in this age of console controllers and mouse-based games...
