How did these work? I'm thinking the 'broom' had a magnet and the car may have had an opposing magnet so opposing forces led to the car being 'pushed and 'steered'?

Lol...scotch that question, just found out...They were also called 'Zing - O - Matic' by Matchbox and its simply a handle and you tie an elastic length to it, theres a sticker like arrow that connects to this and you stick that under the front of the car....a quick pull drags the car. Pretty naff if you ask me and I bet the cars tipped over no end getting damaged. No surprise then Matchbox ended the line in 1973...lol.

Not at all how I imagined they would work

Nice pics - disappointing idea though. I still bet the car didn't do what Matchbox claimed they would. Incidentally, I went through a phase of buying old cars like these and I've got 3 of the cars in the middle pic amongst many, the two gold cars and the bronze one: Lamborgini Muira, Hot Rod Draguar and BMC Pininfarinia.
