  • Toy Car City.

OK, I'll do my best to explain this, it might take a while so bear with me

Back in the late 70's there was a track type thing. Basically it was a sort of city layout with miniature Scalextric track at the scale of matchbox cars. You had to attach a drawing pin to the bottom of your matchbox car and when you put it on the road it woud drive around the town. I think the box it came in may have had a tipper truck on it, but don't quote me on that.

Now this toy town was inter-connectable - so if you and your mates had one you could make massive towns with huge circuits for your cars.... which leads me to my second request..

Around the same time as this toy being popular I was treated to a trip up to the local big toy store (may have been Lewis's for anyone familiar with Stoke). There was this guy there who had a HUGE city layout that looked like this toy track. And I mean huge, far bigger than a full size snooker table. He also had an airport that had planes landing and taking off (on nylon string). If I remember correctly the guy in charge was dressed as a commercial pilot and at the end of his demo he sold postcards of the toy city for 10p. I bought one but it has long since gone.

On a personal note I remember this trip for two reasons - firstly because of the huge toy city and secondly because I was trusted to the care of my eldest sister, who promptly lost me and buggered off.

    Cheers,
    Finnthedude.

I believe it was known as the Matchbox Motorcity or something along those lines. I've only ever seen photos of them though, although I've always thought they looked great.

Looked at TV advert for this, but the cars don't drive themselves, so might be different set OP is after

I was about 6 - I ended up at the store's staff room where a very kind lady talked to me and got my name and address from me and she tried phoning my folks. My sister had panicked when she lost me and had already phoned them - my parents rushed into town to find me so I was only 'lost' for a few minutes

I don't remember much about being lost, I just remember the fuss that my folks made of me when they picked me up.

                    Cheers,
