  • Hamleys memories?

With it being London's (and probably the UK's) most famous toyshop, I wondered if anyone had any special memories of Hamleys in the 1970s - 1980s?

My dad worked on the store's redesign in the early 1980s and used to take me there occasionally at weekends - buying a Star Wars figure if lucky (all of which thankfully I've kept).

I haven't been to the store for a few years but have very happy memories of it and have collected Hamleys catalogues from the 1970s and 80s.

Just wondered if anyone had any special memories of Hamleys, perhaps as part of a childhood trip to London?

      Ive never heard of hamleys.
I sure dont remember seeing one over here.

Seems they have been going from 1760 when they where established.

It says est 1760 london at the entrance.

First time I went to Hamley's was a pretty amazing experience. We had a few local toy shops in the city I grew up in, but Hamleys had basically a complete selection of every type of toy you could have, and more you'd never even known about. I must have been probably 8 or 9, and my mum took me there to get me a birthday present (she had to go to London for some other reason) and I chose a Darda set, this one:-

I was treated to Hamley's several times in the 70's. I also worked in Oxford Street in the late 80's, so used to go and wander around it some lunchtimes as it was at the top of Regent's St.

I lives in a village that had a small toy store, that was half a clothes store. Going to this massive store, all 6 floors of it, was a mind blowing experience!

Does it count as reliving my childhood if I've never grown up?
