Jewel creatures/people with folding legs?

I have this vague memory of these little plastic characters (I think you could get people or animals) and their arms and legs folded up and they became jewels or something...? Or perhaps they had jewels in their stomachs. They were only small and around in the late 80's in the UK. Any ideas?
