Please help me identify a sci-fi movie.

i don't have much to go on here. I remember seeing this movie probably on a Saturday morning in the mid 80's. So I reckon it's probably a late 70s early 80s movie. Sci fi movie. It's lots of running around and shooting.

The one specific thing I remember about the movie is the hero (and possibly the other characters too) had a quite unusual laser gun. I can't remember exactly what it looked like but if you've ever seen the laser pistols from the80's show 'V' ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDpaDpckAjY ) then imagine this heros laser gun almost looked like he was holding that gun upside down, ie it had a big handle that went all around the fist and a nozzle that was under the wrist.

Does this sound familiar to anyone here?

I'm a huge sci fi fan of the 70s and 80s but can't recall any of these details, sorry. I'm sure someone here will be able to help.

It sounds like the TV Series Space 1999 to me.

Could it have been "Otherworld"? The show features a weapon quite like the one described by the OP, usually in the hands of the "Thel" security police.

Wow. Great answer and completely unexpected after this time. I'm 99.99% certain that Otherworld is what it was. I'm watching ep #1 now and there's a scene about 40mins in where they're running thru a tunnel shooting at each other with those strange guns and it seems almost exactly what I remember! It even has a sort of "Lost in Space" type family aspect to the cast and that's how I remembered it too (sorry I didn't include that info first time around).

I was slightly wrong about the guns however. They looked more like police baton's, but regardless they were indeed weird looking upside-down guns.
