I remember watching The Julie Andrews films as a child.They were great.Pennies from heaven ,i do believe had Bob Hoskins in it.Well i think it did.
One of my all time fav,s has to be West side story.Without a doubt!!!

There were two versions of "Pennies From Heaven", the original TV miniseries that starred Bob Hoskins and the 1981 film version with Steve Martin. I love the final scene from the miniseries with its view of Hammersmith Bridge.

i hate musicals i just dont get people suddenly bursting into song and dance at the drop of a hat if you did that in the middle of the high street you`d be locked up not have 45 other people all joining in

the worst ones are the films about composers theres all ways a scene where you see the main character at their piano playing a brand new piece for the first time suddenly an orchestral backing track bursts out from nowhere and everyone in the neighbour hood sings along if he didnt even know the completed song 5 minutes ago how does the entire street know it...........give me a film about aliens any day far more believable..

I'd say it's far worse to have a "true story" with scenes in it that never actually took place just to make it more exciting.(For instance,the motorbike chase in The Great Escape ,or Al Capone being shot by Elliott Ness in The Untouchables.)

Or Elliott Ness launching Frank Nitti from the rooftop. In actuality Capone's right hand man committed suicide in 1943 or 44 after he was convicted of labour racketeering.

You got to hand it to Saturday night fever though.Without that we wouldn,t have had John Travolta.
A good sing along for me has to be singing in the rain.
Calmity Jane with Doris Day.You can,t beat the oldies when it comes to musicals.
Then there is the flip side of the coin.
What about Tommy.Look at all the great stars and singers in that.
I think i,m remembering to much.lol!!!

Haha! I know what you mean - and when they get the singing star to sing it through for the first time, they sing it without even looking at the music or lyrics! But you just have to suspend your disbelief and enter into the magic of it. I just love the escapism of it all.

My two all-time favourites are West Side Story (with the gorgeous Natalie Wood) and Young At Heart, with Frank Sinatra and Doris Day. Perfection!

Not usually fond of musicals, can't stand Poppins, Oz and all that shmaltz, but there a few I do enjoy, now I've sat and thought about it, and the list is longer than I expected!
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers
Calamity Jane
Fame
Grease (guilty pleasure!)
Sound of Music
Singin' in the Rain
Mamma Mia
Hairspray

I like Quadrophenia too, but I don't think that counts as a musical as such, none of the characters burst into song to propel the story, simply acted to a backdrop of music.

Oh, and Mulan and the Lion King!

Ps OMG I totally forgot my all time fave music movie - Breaking Glass! I could watch it over and over, was obsessed with Hazel O'Connor as a teen because of this movie. (Not keen on her since she went all folkie and Oirish though)
