Boris Karloff - Why Don't We Have Horror Actors Like Him Anymore?

Any Boris Karloff fans here? I thought he was one of the greatest horror actors ever, especially when he played the Frankenstein Monster.

It's a great shame that we don't have any horror character actors of Karloff's calibre anymore.

I was thinking the same the other day when I was watching American horror Story, I think nowadays horror films rely too much on special effects and try to shock us more. Maybe we've become more immune and need stronger stuff to get a reaction?
Also, actors like Karloff started as silent film stars, so maybe they had to rely on more than a script ot convey what they were feeling etc.

I like a lot of the old horror stars, although saying that the old films they starred in still hold suspense and can be very good I doubt if any of these films will scare anybody today.
