unknown movie of the 80's

I have a slight memory of a film i watched when i was around 9 or 10 so this would be 1988 / 1989 i think!!! it was about 2 children and they each had a stone one was red one was blue (i think) there was an old man in the film and i believe he gave them the stones and the stones lit up and gave them powers, at the very end the old man died i cried buckets but i'm afraid my memory is quite hazy of anything else in the film. Can anyone help me???
