I've been trying to track down the name of this movie, and am getting knowhere fast 
It's not that old, I don't think ?? 2000 - 2005 ??
basically the plot is a bloke going home to his small hometown in america, but when He get's there , it is deserted and something is wrong, during the film, it transpires that there is a black oily thingy going around possessing people ( can't remember if it's alien orientated or the Devil ?? )
I think Ian Mckellen was one of the main actors in it
wish I could be more specific, but Ive been on nightshift for the last fortnight and Im knackered
