Anyone remember this children's film in the 70's? It was shown at the cinema as part of a double-bill with "Benji" (schmaltzy film about a scruffy dog). E lollipop was about the friendship between a little blonde white boy with a medical condition and a little black boy, not sure what country it was set in but it was set abroad. At the climax of the film the 2 run away together into the mountains because they are about to be separated, but white boy doesn't have his medication and his life will be in danger if his body temperature drops too low. It starts to snow, white boy collapses, black boy removes his own garments to keep white boy alive. Both fall asleep in the snow. They are found, cut to funeral at end of film. I THINK we are led to believe white boy didn't survive, but it turns out to be black boy's funeral, complete with the "no greater love than he who lays down his life for a friend" quote. Utterly heartbreaking, I still fill up just thinking about it!

Thanks, Joybee - no wonder I've never heard any trace of this film, didn't know it had another name. It was interesting reading the reviews on the link you supplied, I think I may have to get a copy on dvd to watch with my own kids. Recently watched The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas with my 9 year old son - it affected him quite a bit and he was asking all sorts of questions afterwards (as indeed he should!). I think he and his older sister will take a lot away from this one.
