movie about a german soilder and a kid who is dressed as a cowboy

my memories all a bit patchy but many years ago i remember being up late one night when i was a kid ,and saw this film set in WW2 in some sort of spanish village there was this boy who was obsesssed with westerns and a german soilder
i think he was a general or something
(ive got this weird feeling it was rod steiger but when ive looked on wikipedia none of his listed films seem to match) i seem to recall (but im not 100% sure) there was this scene where the soilder has a real gun and the kids got a wooden one and wants to fast draw with the german and the kid is killed
any ideas?

but ive found it it was set in holland and its called lucky star
