Thinking about Liberace, always stuck me if you pronounced it as spelt it was 'Liber Ace'. Should have been spelt as it sounded....'Libber Archee'.

When Clive James used to do his extremely funny programmes about global tv he used to do this on-going feature about Telly Savalas, in the 70s he'd actually done these public information films about different cities he'd 'been to' i.e. he did the voice overs. Of course he'd never been to places....like Birmingham which stuck to mind. It was very funny the way Clive would intercut his funny opinions into Telly's overly enthused tones on things like the 1970's industrial area of Birmingham or a local shop...

Savalas was naturally bald, he didn't shave his head to look like anybody- he just lost his hair at a very early age. In the early episodes he smoked cigars, but changed to lollipops when the producers feared that it was encouraging children to smoke.
His brother George Savalas passed away in the late '80s, and Telly himself followed on in '94 after battling cancer. He attracted some criticism when he hosted a live TV show in 1987 during which a safe that had been raised from the wreck of the 'Titanic' was opened on stage, some folks thought he was condoning grave robbery. The safe turned out to be empty anyway- HA HA!!

Here's Savalas in the infamous "Return to the Titanic" special. Notice how he also handled the Titanic artifacts with his bare hands!

I think it came right on the heels of Geraldo Rivera's farce with Al Capone's vault. What makes me laugh is how Savalas comes off as a snarky maitre d' in that Titanic special.
