Seventies childrens programme....

Can anyone recall a seventies TV programme for kids..... It had a guy who was the presenter and he had a white cartoon type character with him, and they would tell stories or read books. The little cartoon guy was quite small but would float around the screen (I think). It was a kind of "serious" programme with story telling but I can't recall for the life of me what it is called..........

Any ideas? It is driving me mad!

It was 'Words and Pictures'. The white cartoon character was called Charlie.
