Can you help me identify a (Southern) 70s/80s chidren's drama?

I only caught it a few times when we went to visit relatives near Portsmouth (Southern TV region?) as it wasn't on our local channel, so my memory is very sketchy. It was about a boy/teenager and I think that he was searching for his family. I thought the theme tune might have been Stanley Myers 'Cavatina' or something similar and the programme might have been called something like 'Borders', however searching online hasn't got me anywhere. I always wanted to watch the whole series but it was back in the days before t'internet (or even VCR in my house!) and I was too young to remember much about it other than feeling intrigued and wanting to know how the story went. It would be great if somebody knew what the series was so I can find out more about it.
