Remember 80/90's family program

My husband is driving me and all our friends mad. He seems to think he can remember a television program that was on at about 5-5:30 in the evening, probably American. Late 1980 early 1990's

It was about a man who lived in a cave on a university campus. He seems to think he had cat like features and was a 'do-gooder' who helped the students with their problems.

Is he going mad or did this programme ever exist ?

Please put us all out of misery !!!
