Another point to make is that the northern soaps such as Coronation Street and Emmerdale have been around a lot longer.

Casualty and Doctors are not soaps by the way.

True and though EE is doom and misery, it is way more realstic than the Northern Soaps I think
As I have london (Dagenham ) which is East but more North east London relations who married into the Family he'll tell you hand on heart what "Max and Jack Branning do with a punch up/row/falling out whatever - then meet up in the Pub 6 hours or a day later" is a real true reflection in his opinion of London and in-particular East-London Life!

still going in 2020 but with a fraction of the viewers back in the 80s

Lots of Eastender babes over the years....
    Gillian Taylforth
    Daniella Westbrook
    Nicola Stapleton
    Shirley Cheriton
    Patsy Palmer
    Michelle Collins
but no attempt to make them look glam on screen... instead everything had to
be grubby and street cred.... everyone walking about in anoracs and jeans

    wot a waste....!
Can not help but agree with you here silverbirch with there being some stunning looking women on it. Gillian Talyforth looks amazing given she is in her 60s and she looks 25 years younger tha Adam Woodyatt who age has'nt been kind to. Talk of her being his Mum - he could play the part of her Dad and it'd be more covincing than her being his mum in the extreme!

For me the ultimate two stunners are still on it and have just left - Sharon and Mel .... 2 stunners who look amazing for tyheir advancing years, though of course I was always partial to a woman with a "Permed Haircut" as so was so "back in the day" that Sharon donned!!

Martine McCuthen as Tiffany was always a stunner too as is Charlie Brooks as Janine and even Lisa (Lucy Benamin) looks well - admitted not as well as Mel (Tamzn Outhwaite) who like Sharon just excels beyond their years and must have lived all their lives in Monestry's to look so well

Additionaly I loved roxy and Ronnie Mitchell as "stunners" and Kim Medcalf indeed as Sam Mitchell number 2 - who gave her a great new twist as an intellegent woman and buisness-women and an astute woman of the world. tracey Ann oberman as Chrisse Watts was equaly beautiful too!
