Foreign kids TV show where man was branded across the eyes…

..with his own sword and left to wander around episode after episode until at the end of the series he was under water which had oil on it and was on fire and when he surfaced he could see?!

Does anyone remember that and could provide details? I don’t know if it was late 70s or early 80s. I’m sure it was more than one episode.
