Today (Sunday 16th October 2022) marks exactly 50 years to the day since that children's TV classic Rainbow first made it on the air at 12.05 pm (and I am going to post this at exactly the same time that it started). There was no Geoffrey Hayes (he was impersonating a police officer in Z Cars), or George in the first series (George started in series two, and Geoffrey debuted in series three), but Zippy and Bungle were there from the beginning, along with Geoffrey's predecessor David Cook. It was so successful that it ran for 20 years. The 1,000th edition was in October 1986.
Today also marks 50 years since Emmerdale (Farm) started and it still going strong - but which programme were youngsters more interested in back then, I wonder? They were both part of ITV's new daytime schedule back then.
Happy 50th Birthday, Rainbow!
