With the portables upstairs they didn't have a remote so I had to get up to change channel, but the downstairs TV in the living room had a remote, and so I used it - in fact, when it needed to be replaced in the 1990s I got a One for All remote control from Argos and used that instead with a little help from the company's helpline when I tried every code available in order to work it.
