and now some history
From the Guardian
January 09, 1982
"Britain's only satellite television company, SATV, which is planning to use a satellite to beam English language programs funded by commercials, yesterday said it had raised the 4 million funds required from backers. The first broadcasts, all aimed at Europe and Scandinavia, start in March.
The venture is a high risk one, and is aimed at countries where a cable TV network is well established, and English is a widely spoken language."
Of course SATV made a huge loss and was bought by Rupert Murdoch in 1984, who renamed the station "SKY channel". The name was changed again to SKY One in 1989 and was one of the first channels launched on the Astra satellite as a Direct Broadcast to Satellite (DBS) service ie meant to be received by home satellite recievers rather than cable customers.
