  • Red Dwarf Returns

I remember being very struck with the early episodes in the eighties. It was brilliant for four or five series, but it wasn't quite the same after one of the two writers left and it got too slick.
But I was thinking recently that they aught to wrap it all up and give it an ending, and now Red Dwarf "Back To Earth" is coming this Easter weekend, oddly, on Dave.
I think it's a couple of specials, or something, and maybe it will tie it all up - don't know.
    Looking forward to it.

I can't wait for these special episodes, I can't believe the BBC didn't pick it up though. I remember around 1997 when series seven came out and there was such a big build up to it, I remember The Radio Times even devoted a cover to it with all the crew members on. Something I noticed when watching the DVDs back again is how I much prefer the earlier episodes to the later ones, some of the exchanges between Lister and Rimmer are just genius.

I saw a plug for it during the ads in The Brittas Empire earlier where they were driving what looked like a green smart car around. Looks good!!

I'd like to see them do a one off update of The Young Ones.

Second series was probably the peak for me... despite many clever ideas and exchanges later on.
(Same with Blackadder? Wonderful idea, but the second series had "found its feet", was more assured, less uneven.)

But both Ace Rimmer and Dwayne Dibley were magical conceptions.

Maybe we should form a 'commitee for the liberation & integration of terrifying organisms and their rehabilitation into society'!

Well what did everyone think of Back To Earth?

I thought it was a very good twist and really enjoyed them. Wonderful to see the guys again.

                            Re: Red Dwarf Returns

I know some people have their misgivings about these episodes, and I can understand them as I wasn't sure myself right up to end. I thought the central conceit undermined the show. I wondered if Doug Naylour had had enough and was just going to kill them all off, but I now know I was being kept in suspence.
By the end, the plot twists worked out brilliantly and I totally agreed with the writer that it was "one of the most interesting" Red Dwarfs ever. Too brave for some who want the comfort of familiarity, but I really appreciated it.
It turns out it wasn't a final wrap up, and didn't even answer what happened at the end of the last series, even refering to "series nine".
                            More in the offing?
                            Hope so.

                              Re: Red Dwarf Returns

I enjoyed Back To Earth and thought it was teriffic TV for the Easter weekend. I thought the actual interior of the ship itself looked great and for me it was as though the cast had never been away. I was a bit gutted that Holly/Norman Lovett didn't appear but I suppose there is only so much you can fit into three epsiodes, all of which I enjoyed very much. I really hope this isn't the end for Red Dwarf, I would love another series, I can imagine the hype and build-up for another series alone would be tremendous.

I just need to say that I thought Rimmer stole the show in Back To Earth, Chris Barrie I salute you sir!
