90's tv drama set in WW2

Someone please help, i remember watching a great WW2 drama about a small group of soldiers (possibly australian??) in the pacific who get captured by the japanese and then beheaded. It was a very poignant and moving drama and had quite an affect on me watching it as a teenager. For some reason i have the name 'heroes' in my head but can't find any trace. I would be eternally gratefull if anyone can remember what it was called.
