  • BBC Russian: Language and People

anyone remember a Russian language teaching program on BBC called
    Russian: Language and People.

i think it was shown about 10am on sundays

The female presenter was a very attractive lady with long dark hair.
I remember here first name being Tanya
she also had 2 male co-presenters with bad 70's haircuts.

i remember Clive James writing about the program and saying something to the effect of "this woman is so beautiful you want to jump for joy"

this link has videos to the little film they showed every week.
unfortunately it doesnt show the presenters

i found what clive james said here

Tanya, who is so pretty she makes you want to burst out cheering, has the kind of Slavic cheek in which it is difficult to tell whether the tongue has been inserted, but I suspect that at this point she might have been slyly hinting, for those with the acumen to catch on, that the Soviet authorities have been not entirely ingenuous in the way they have co-operated.

Wonderful that someone else remembers and appreciates this series. I was absolutely fascinated by it; the whole glimpsing behind the iron curtain thing; the beautiful Olga in "Goodbye Summer" so full of life and spirit...oh and learning a bit of the Russian language along the way. Great stuff!

Thanks so much for reminding me and also for the great links to "Goodbye Summer" and Clive James' take on it.

      ДО СВИДАНИЯ ЛЕТО

Or as we know it: Goodbye,Summer.

The youtube channel: only4russian has a good few episodes of the series,if not the lot.I don't know,as i cannot understand russian.

COLD WAR-MOCKING adult education affair wherein TANYA FEIFER taught eager proto-Glasnostians the Cyrillic alphabet, basic phrasebook expressions and how to ask for a black bread sandwich. Had token pissy romantic photostory, “Goodbye Summer” (sorry – “Dosvidanya Lieta”). Made under tight restrictions, but still managed to have a go at Brezhnev et al on a visit to a Soviet “super” market, when Tanya commented, “The store was PARTICULARLY well-stocked when we arrived.” You bet it was.

Re: BBC Russian: Language and People

I remember Russian Language and People, it was on Sundays (lunchtimes I think) on BBC1 some time early 1980s. What amazed me was seeing the capital R and N back to front, those being unusual Cyrillic characters.

When I was in the sixth form at secondary school in 1989 one teacher (who had just organised a Russian Exchange, which I didn't go on) told me the back-to-front N is actually pronounced ee.
