i have been racking my brains for years trying to remember a 70s or 80s tv horror series.
the one episode i can recall is about a bedridden child who has no one to
look after him except a maid or a health worker she visits every day calling the word "company" when she enters the house.
unfortunately she gets killed and the child is all alone again
then one night the child hears footsteps on the stairs and hears the immortal word "company"
ANY IDEAS GUYS!

This sounds like it might be the Ray Bradbury story "The Emissary", which has the bedridden boy, who sends his dog out into the streets each day to bring back company. Amongst them is his school teacher, until she is killed in an accident. Then the dog goes out and doesn't come back for a long time, because he's been digging in the cemetery...

This was done in the 70s as part of "Late Night Story" on BBC2, a sort of adult "Jackanory", with Tom Baker reading 5 different horror stories featuring child protagonists.
