Lonngg time ago on Ed Sullivan - but in colour - there was a unique ventriloquist on this show (next to Arthur Worsley I'd put him).
Anyway, this was a young guy with an afro hair style & a red jacket. Puppet's name was Danny.
He OPENLY spoke the puppet's part - WITHOUT CHANGING VOICES OR MANIPULATING THE DELIBERATELY AMATEURISHLY MADE DUMMY. (Pls read this again!)

(Dummy) "Why don't you have a cigarette - that always calms you down!"
(Vent.) "Good idea! ..I'll smoke the cigarette while you sing... Ready?"
(D) "Ready anytime you are!"
V drops dummy on floor (sprawled), lights cigarette & while puffing, tries to sing Swanee River.
As I said: Unique!
